There was considerable powder about but
    Graves
, who had been blown to the deck, instead of seeking safety, called for water and stamped out burning waste.
While searching for wounded, he found Lyles, Seaman, who had been killed.
He carried Lyles out and the returned to the smoke filled compartment to assist in further securing everything.

SURRENDER OF THE GERMAN HIGH SEAS FLEET
On November 21, 1918, the German High-Seas Fleet surrendered to the English Grand Fleet accompanied by the American battleship Force, at a rendezvous about forty miles east of May Osland, which guards the entrance to the Firth of Forth.
The Grand Fleet was ordered in two parallel columns six miles apart, between which the surrendered ships proceeded and were escorted to their anchorage for internment.
The American Force occupied position in the middle of the north line of the Grand Fleet.
The English and American ships flew their battle flags; the Germans their national colors, which at sundown were lowered, never to be raised again.
