Theophilus
Theophilus was raised to the rank of co-emperor and married to Theodora on the same day – the 12
th
of May 821.  He was a staunch iconoclast, and the historians have accordingly treated him with some contempt.  It should be remembered that nearly all history of this period is ecclesiastical history and subject to severe bias.  He was well educated, and a patron of the arts, with a sense of justice and compassion.  Theophilus was one of the few emperors that was accessible to the common man and even frequented local markets.
Militarily, the empire was troubled during this reign.
Even the dynasty’s ancestral homeland of Amorium was lost to the Arabs amidst a terrible slaughter of its citizens.
Sicily also continued to slip away.
Constantine was the eldest son of Theophilus and Theodora.
He was elevated to the throne as co-emperor shortly after his father’s accession, but apparently died within a year or so.
Their infant son Michael was named co-emperor in September, 840.
