Moissanite is actually gem quality silicon carbide, and in its white form may be mistaken for a diamond. However it is no diamond simulant as it surpasses a diamond in both fire and brilliance. Its superior hardness make it ideal for heirloom quality jewelry as it is extremely resistant to scratching, chipping and breaking.  In addition, for the socially conscious, Moissanite is ethically sourced and environmentally friendly.
Natural Moissanite was first discovered in minute quantities from particles carried to earth by a meteorite 50,000 years ago. Currently, all Moissanite that is used for jewelry has been recreated in a lab. However, unlike other diamond alternatives that can cloud and dull with time, Moissanite is just as atomically stable as a diamond and so its impossible for it to change color or lose its optical properties with time. In fact, given that Moissanite is more heat resistant than diamond, it can be argued its even more atomically stable.
As a jeweler, my personal preference is for Blue Moissanite - I love the different shades that it exhibits as it moves from daylight to artificial light.  Its fire and brilliance is truly something to see, but is difficult to reproduce in photographs!
