Description
Exceptionally rare and highly sought after, original 1918 United States World War I "United War Work Campaign" Poster titled "Care for Her Through the YWCA" by Adolph Treidler. This fantastic, original World War I “United Work Campaign” Poster measures approx. 30" by 41" and features a captivating image of a strikingly attractive, young woman dressed in a white work shirt, khaki overalls and matching workman’s cap. In her raised hands she supports a World War I era military bi-plane and a large artillery shell symbolic of the fact that her home front factory work supports the delivery of the weapons of war to the troops overseas. Text at the lower right quadrant of the sheet reads "For every fighter, a woman worker!"She stands in front of a large, inverted blue triangle – the symbol of the YWCA – an organization that did much to support the single young women who made up much of the backbone of the home front workforce that supplied the machinery of war so desperately needed by American Troops overseas during World War I.
The Poster carries the mark of the lithographer – the American Lithographic Company of New York City – as well as the signature of the artist – Adolph Treidler – in the plate.
This powerful and highly effective poster was created for the YWCA, which played an important role in improving the welfare of women throughout WWI. It highlights the emergence of the female industrial worker, who proved to be a versatile and skilled performer. The YWCA advocated for women’s rights in the workplace, limiting lengthy shifts and prohibiting night work.
In an era today, when the subject of the importance of “Women in the Workforce” has become something that rightly dominates social discourse, this 1918 imagery rivals the World War II “Rosie the Riveter” Poster as a representation of the strength of the American Working Woman and the importance of the contribution of American Women to the success of the American Nation!!
This poster is fresh to the market and has not been linen backed, restored or retouched in any way. It is in good to very good, original condition. The sheet is clean with no soiling or staining. The colors are bright and vibrant with no fading or bleeding. There is, however, edge wear and small edge chips at the top right and bottom edges as can be seen in the scans below as well as a tight tear entering the sheet near the top of the right hand side and another entering the sheet near the bottom of the right hand side. With a quality matting and framing the Poster will make a stunningly beautiful and very impressive display piece. Please see the scans below for a good representation of the form and condition of this rare World War I “Women at Work” / Home Front Poster.
