    History of these coins:
During the later period of the Roman empire Christianity began to replace paganism.  This change was reflected in their coinage.  Gone were the images of emperors replaced instead with images of Jesus Christ and religious inscriptions called "Christo grams".  The reverse side of the coin offered here carries an image of the virgin Mary
.  These coins represent significant change in the world's religious direction and have become highly collectible.
The coin offered is classed as a "G" and has the following characteristics:
    Attributed to Romanus IV (1068-1071)
Obv. Bust of Christ facing, wearing nimbus cross with no pellets, pallium and colobium, and holding scrolls in left hand, raising right hand in benediction, in field IC-XC as in 1856.  Border of large pellets.
Rv. Bust of the Virgin orans (Mary), wearing nimbate, pallium and maphorium (hooded cloak or shawl. In field MP to left, ΘV to right (
    Mother of God
) with border of large pellets.
Overstruck on previous issues of Constantine X and Romanus IV.
Anonymous Folles minted under the reign of various emperors include:
    John I, 969 - 976 AD.
Basil II and Constantine VIII, circa 989 AD.
    Romanus III, 1028 - 1034 AD.
    Michael IV, 1034 - 1041 AD.
    Constantine IX, 1042 - 1055 AD.
    Constantine X, 1059 - 1067 AD.
    Romanus IV, 1068 - 1071 AD.
