    History of these coins:
During the later period of the Roman empire Christianity began to replace paganism.  This change was reflected in their coinage.  Gone were the images of emperors replaced instead with images of Jesus Christ and religious inscriptions called "Christo grams".  The reverse side of the coin offered here carries a typical Christo gram:
    IHSUS XRISTUS BASILEU BASILE
"Jesus Christ, King of Kings".  These coins represent significant change in the world's religious direction and have become highly collectible.
The coin offered is classed as an "A2" and has the following characteristics:
A2's are distinguished by their larger size, some flans up to 36 mm diameter.  The increase of weight suggests the period of great power and prosperity for the empire which was during the joint reign of Basil II and Constantine VIII.  So the dating can be traced back from 989 to the death of Basil II in 1025.  It is possible that this type continued to be minted after 1025, perhaps until as late as 1028, during the sole reign of Constantine VIII.  These coins are not overstruck on other coins.  Average weight was 15 grams with some over 20. Usually present is more ornamentation of various types on
Anonymous Folles minted under the reign of various emperors include:
    John I, 969 - 976 AD.
Basil II and Constantine VIII, circa 989 AD.
    Romanus III, 1028 - 1034 AD.
    Michael IV, 1034 - 1041 AD.
    Constantine IX, 1042 - 1055 AD.
    Constantine X, 1059 - 1067 AD.
    Romanus IV, 1068 - 1071 AD.
    Nicephorus III, 1078 - 1081 AD.
